    Idea [I] Frontpage Fix

    I liked Web Gallery Wizard Pro so much that I purchased Shozam without trying it or reading the forum comments from beta users.  After installing it and creating a gallery, I found out that the slideshow had tiny images when I published it with FP 2003 just as others here have.  Knowing that FP and its extensions can cause problems at times, I tried every trick I knew to fool it. I finally gave up and emailed the FP guru I host my sites with.  After 5 minutes he called me by phone with the fix and sent the directions by email.  I thought I would pass it on.

    You need 2 rules:

    1. DO NOT generate a gallery into your web folders on your computer. Save it in My Documents somewhere else.
    2. DO NOT name a folder in the web folders on your computer the same as a folder on your web server.

    Now, you need to create a folder within your site on your web server.

    Because it works with FP 2003, I presume it will work with previous versions and Expression.

    1. Open your site directly on your web server using FP.
    2. Create a folder in your root directory with a name that is NOT in the FP web on your computer (Rule 2).
    3. After the folder is created, right click on it and choose "Convert to Web".
    4. Close the site.

    Now, you can FTP your gallery to that folder using whatever program you want other then FP.  I use WS_FTP.

    You can see the results here: Haiti Mission Trip.  It was just a test to see if I could get it to work.

    I never uninstalled or disabled FP extensions and also published a couple of test pages using FP publishing tool.  They work fine and didn't interfere with the gallery.

    If it ain't broke... fix it until it is!

     I don't use frontpage but noticed your post. I'm sure this will help quite a few people. I also took a look at your photos. Some great shots of those kids. Bet you had a great time there.

    Thanks for the heads-up.  As we've been discussing in emails, I'm still not sure why some people can view my gallery fine, and others have the small images as you've described.  Very strange behaviour pattern.

    Still working on it... we'll see how it goes.  Big Smile

     Cowboy -- Thanks for the fix, I was sure FP would require some sort of workaround. . .do you know if this fix is required with Expression as well?  I'm redoing a rather large site, and have upgraded my WGW & FP to Shozam & Expression.  Never mind the total idiocy of trying to redesign and launch a website while learning two new programs.  (Never said I was the brightest crayon in the box.)

     Just trying to spot the bugs BEFORE they trip me up. . .

    Thanx,

    T.

    Re: Frontpage Fix

     You do not need FP Extensions for Expression because it was designed to be fully functional with ASP.NET.  If you want, you can still use the Extensions.

    Depending on whether you used any functions of FP requiring Extensions to work in your prior web site will determine if you need them.  If you didn't, then make sure you uninstall them on your server so there is no chance that they will effect Shozam.

    A brief overview:

    http://www.cgmsystems.com/Resources/software%20reviews/Expression-Web-Designer.htm

    Expression basically got rid of bots but the one probably the most used is the include page function is probably most missed.

    http://www.firstexpression.com/

    The above site will give you some guidelines and suggestions for Expression.  It also gives you FP Bot Macro For EW which "will re-enable the ability to insert FrontPage Include pages, Search Forms, Hit Counters, and Photo Galleries from the Insert menu in Microsoft Expression Web. The FP Bot Macro also re-enables the Database Results Wizard (DRW) and adds the "Spooky Diet" macro to clean up the DRW code."

    You may want to join some Expression forums to get more help with any problems that may arise.  I just stuck it out with FP 2003.

    Good luck.

    Re: Frontpage Fix

    Once again, Cowboy to the rescue!  Thanks for the info and the links.

    The only reason my site had FP extensions in the first place was that I was on a host server that required them for the site to publish correctly.  I use ftp with the new host, so that isn't even an issue anymore.  And I'm certain I don't use any functionality that would require them.  So it seems moving to EW will probably be a good thing, at least for me.

     Thanx again,

    T.

    Re: Frontpage Fix

    Cowboy,

    I want to look further into simple solutions to alleviate the 31px x 31px slideshow image issue for users with FP Server Extensions. I have posted the question to anumber of FP related forums.

    http://www.timeforweb.com/frontpage/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6748&PN=1&TPN=1

    http://www.talkfrontpage.com/showthread.php?p=48249

    http://www.frontpagetalk.com/forums/m_84565/appid_/p_1/mpage_1/key_/tmode_1/smode_1/s_/tm.htm

    http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-384530/tm.htm

    Wanted to let you know in case you would like to weigh in there as one that is intimate with Shozam and FP.

    Also, I found interesting the suggestion posted in the first link. Could you test to see if it produces results on your server with the extensions installed? Basically bracketing the code for the image display with a tag supposedly telling the Server Extensions to leave that code alone... If this works, we can change the Shozam code so there would be no further need of technical workarounds.

    <!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan -->
    <img src="../theme/images/indicator.gif" id="SlideShow" name="SlideShow" border="0" class="imgBorder protect" />
    <!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" endspan -->

    In the interim, if someone has the FrontPage issue with the Shozam Slideshow, and they have Shozam Business Edition, they can also try putting the following code on the HTML tab in Step 5 of Shozam.

    Put in the upper box:
    <!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan -->

    Put in the lower box:
    <!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" endspan -->

    Please post here if this corrects the Slideshow issue.

    Re: Frontpage Fix

    I know nothing about your product, but will add a couple of notes about the FrontPage HTML Markup component in the hope that the information may be of value.

     * The HTML Markup component tags will not correct anything, they simply prevent reformatting of the code between them.

     * The HTML Markup component tags need to be between the <body> and </body> tags.

     * HTML Markup component tags do not rely on the FrontPage server extensions.

    Some additional possibly useful information:

    The usual authoring scenario is to create and edit the FrontPage web site files on your computer then publish the site to the web server. Under this scenario, you can FTP additional folders to the site on the server that FrontPage knows nothing about and cares nothing about. These additional non FrontPage folders may hold anything such as externally-generated slide show files and other scripts such as PHP message forums. The files in this folder will not be edited by FrontPage.

    Re: Frontpage Fix

    It now appears to work using FP loading with extensions. Winsave/Gates host.
    Loaded with FrontPage Publish command

     Do This: Step 5:

    Re: Frontpage Fix

    Further monkeying around indicates that the:

    Step 5, HTML tab, insert code above and below, is not necessary. Just the code in the album slideshow.htm appears all that is required. Previewed in IE7, Firefox, Safari. All appear fine.

    See test2.

    www.primetimebulldogs.com/test2/index.htm

    Cheers. (I may now find a reason to use the slideshow feature)

    Re: Frontpage Fix

    Great that it's working :)

     For what it's worth, the Microsoft Knowledgebase said both tags should be inside the <body> section and I see your first tag is just outside. Can't argue with success though! Smile

    Re: Frontpage Fix

    The first attempt using only Step 5, Html, Code above and below did not produce the desired results. It appears the code on the albums slideshow.htm is the key and only requirement.

    I'll move it in and try it. I'm still a novice at best when looking at code.
